Did you know that there is an alternative to the stiff and posed family photo you’re used to when the idea of capturing your family comes to mind? It’s called “documentary family photography” and aims to capture the real version of your little tribe as opposed to those picture-perfect images you see in the shopfront of your local photographer.
There’s so much power in capturing normal life – the mundane, the every day, the “unexciting” stuff that makes your life so unique. The moments that seem trivial to you now, will be the ones that you’ll cherish in 5/10/20 years. They’ll remind you of your life as it was “back then”, the things you did together, the place you called home. Those memories are not just for you, they’re for your children too.
My approach to photography and family films is purely documentary. Because real life isn’t perfect and it can’t be posed.
What are family films you ask?
A family film is like a photograph coming to life. It’s a family portrait. It captures the essence of a family or a person and translates it into a tangible memory. In my films, I add movements and sound which makes a memory so much more real than just a photo.
Imagine you could bottle up the way your child mispronounces a certain word. The way it feels to prepare breakfast together. The mess too. Anything that seems to be a routine and ordinary in your life now, will feel special a few years down the line. These moments are a keepsake you will be able to relive it in a month or 20 years through my films.

Where do these family photo and film sessions take place?
The most important thing when having family portraits taken, is that all of you feel comfortable. The place that’s most familiar to you, would usually be your home. That’s why I always suggest your house as a location for at least part of your photo session. These homestories also give me the opportunity to document you in your personal space. In 20 years, you’ll look back at these images and remember all the small details that will have changed in your life.
But documentary family photos and family films don’t just work at home. It can include walking the dog, going to the market to buy eggs, picking up the laundry or visiting the playground or the beach. Whatever your day would usually look like, can and should be part of the photos that tell the story of you.
The goal of these documentary photo and film sessions is to capture who you are as a family and create memories for you and your kids to look back to in years to come.
