Why documenting your life isn’t about perfection – it’s about presence

Do you ever feel like your life isn’t “interesting enough” to document? That your home is too messy, your routine too ordinary, or your photos too imperfect to be worth keeping?

Let me stop you right there.

Your life – as it is, right now – is worth remembering. Not in a curated, polished, highlight-reel kind of way, but in the beautifully imperfect, quiet, messy, joyful, chaotic way it unfolds day by day.

This article is an invitation for you to join my A September to Remember project – a gentle guide to documenting your everyday life with one photo and one written note each day. Whether you’re joining me for the full month or just dipping your toes in, here’s your reminder:

Documenting your life isn’t about perfection. It’s about presence.

Perfection is a trap

We tend to think we need the right moment before we press the shutter or write something down. But perfection doesn’t actually exist. Whatever we do, we’ll always find a way it could have been better – a neater frame, better light, more poetic words.

But chasing perfection often stops us from even starting.

It’s better to take imperfect action than wait for the perfect moment that may never come.

In fact, the most meaningful moments often come from things not going to plan. The blurry photo that holds unexpected emotion. The half-written note that reveals something you hadn’t realised. These are the stories that matter.

Presence is what we’re really after

The real goal isn’t a perfect photo album. It’s learning to notice.

This project is about documenting life as it is. The ordinary moments. The quiet routines. The things you usually overlook.

It’s about noticing your child’s favourite toy abandoned on the floor. The way your morning coffee always sits just slightly off-centre on the kitchen table. The light in the hallway at 6pm.

These micro-moments might feel small, but they’re where life happens. And when you look back, they’ll mean everything.

Use what you’ve got – and keep it simple

You don’t need fancy gear or hours of spare time. Your phone camera is perfect. The Notes app works just fine. Jot something down as it happens or at the end of the day – there are no rules here.

If you’re using the A September to Remember guide, you’ll find writing prompts to help you reflect and journal each day. These aren’t homework – they’re gentle nudges to help you see things you might miss.

And the best part? You can put it all together at the end.

Give your story a place to live

Inside the guide, there’s a Canva template designed to turn your daily photos and notes into a simple 8×8″ photo book. Canva even offers printing, which I’ve tried myself – it’s affordable, surprisingly good quality, and easy to use.

You don’t have to print. You don’t have to use my template. But I encourage you to give your stories a home. There’s something powerful about holding your memories in your hands.

Final thoughts

This isn’t about being perfect. It’s about showing up for your life, one small moment at a time. Let this project be your teacher – in presence, in patience, in noticing the beauty of your everyday. Because one day, you’ll look back and realise: these were the moments that mattered most.
