When parents think about family photos, they often imagine something like this:
Standing in a row.
Being told where to put your hands.
Asking the kids to smile nicely.
Trying to keep everyone still long enough to get the shot.
It’s not surprising that a lot of people assume family photo shoots are a bit… boring.
But here’s the thing: family life with young kids is rarely boring. Kids want to move. They want to show you things. They want to climb the sofa, run into the garden, bring you their favourite toy, or suddenly decide it’s the perfect moment for a cuddle.
In other words: life keeps happening.
And when a photo session simply follows what your family is already doing, the experience feels completely different. Anything but boring, really.

Why Real Life Isn’t Boring in a Family Photo Session
During a documentary session, nothing is staged and no one is asked to perform for my camera.
Instead, your family simply does what you’d normally do together: playing, reading stories, making tea, walking the dog, hanging out on the sofa, or exploring outside.
Young children in particular are naturally curious and constantly on the move. They create the moments without anyone having to direct them.
That means the session isn’t about trying to make something happen. It’s about noticing what’s already there.

Why Documentary Family Photo Sessions Take Longer
Another reason these sessions don’t feel rushed or forced is that they take a bit more time. My sessions usually last around two hours. Not because we need to “fill” the time, but because real moments don’t happen on command.
For a little while, everyone can be a bit self-conscious. It’s a bit awkward, kids might be shy and feel like they can’t move freely. Everyone is just kind of aware of the camera and slightly unsure what to do.
But after a while something shifts.
You’ll settle into your normal rhythm, the kids get busy playing or exploring, and the camera slowly fades into the background. That’s when the most meaningful photographs tend to happen.

Why Unposed Family Photo Sessions Feel Different
When a family photo session is simply a slice of your everyday life, it doesn’t feel like something you have to get through. You’re not performing or trying to get the “perfect” shot, you’re just spending time together as a family. And the photographs become a record of that time — the small moments, the laughter, the chaos, the quiet cuddles.
Family life with young children is many things: Loud. Messy. Funny. Unpredictable.
But boring? Usually not.
