Market research and the importance of documenting life

Today’s post is a bit different. I want your opinion about (family) photography and learn more about my clients – or the people I’d love to call my clients anyway. So I created a survey.

TAKE THE SURVEY

Why should you help me with this? My goal is to offer the best service for my clients possible which means I’ll need your input and feedback to get it right. Without asking, I can’t be sure that what I offer is what you actually want or care about.
Also, let me give you a bit of background about why I do what I do.

Documenting life

We all know how fast time passes. 2020 is an exceptional example for this – somehow half a year has passed without us doing most of the things we planned. Weddings, vacations, play dates, family gatherings… All those had to be postponed or compromised. Meanwhile, life went on.

Do you have documentation of all those things that happened this year? I’m sure, despite life being harder than usual for most of us, we’ve had some wonderful moments that we wouldn’t have want to miss. As a photographer myself, I’m making a point of capturing life daily.

Since I started a 365 photo project at the end of last year, I have one of my cameras on me every day to document something interesting that’s happening. Not all days are interesting but that’s the point – ordinary things can grow in importance once they’re no longer available to us. So I try to make sure I capture “the little things” as much as the “big moments”.

Today might not be special but it will come and go and never happen again. Kids grow up, friends move away, routines change, moments turn into memories.

I love my cameras because they enable me to document the world as I see it and share it with you. It helps me to connect with others. This is one reason why I am a photographer and filmmaker. Sharing my work with the people that I took these photos of, is something I always look forward to. It’s not so much about being told how beautiful the photos are (although I love hearing that too) but for them to witness how I see them. My friends, my family, my clients… We’re all so hard on ourselves but if we could only just see ourselves the way our friends see us. THIS is what I love doing.

I want to never stop documenting life around me. But let’s be honest – if I keep doing that just for the kicks, it might as well just be a hobby. Instead, the goal is to get clients who see the value of what I do and want documentation of their own lives.

I’m still relatively new in the family photography industry. I’m not a mum so the only first-hand experience of family I have, is as a daughter and sister. To move my business along, I need to understand how families – mums, dads – feel about family photography. Do they know that there are more possibilities than dressing up, going to a studio with intimidating flashes set up and posing for a few minutes? Because there are!

So here I am, sending out a questionnaire to parents to help me with my market research.

This is why I need you

Are you a parent? Have you ever had your photo taken professionally? No matter what your answer is, I’d be eternally grateful if you would take a few minutes to click on the link below and answer some questions about photography for me. There is no commitment, no hook, no subscription to anything involved. I “just” need your opinion and experience to better understand the market I’m trying to serve.

What’s in it for you?

Well, first of all, you get to share your experience and opinion on what I’d call an important matter – documenting family life. Also, if you are happy to not stay anonymous in the survey and trust me with your email address, you will receive a little thank you from me.
